JACKSON, Ohio (WSAZ) – It all started in 1906. David Mercer says that was when his great-grandfather started the Green Leaf Flowerist and Landscape business in Jackson. Since then, he has been operating on the same ground. Greenhouses that once covered a valuable inventory are now gone.
“Since then we’ve had a storm and the greenhouses are gone,” said Mercer, who now owns the store.
Mercer grew up in the store – a special business passed down through generations of his family. He has too many memories to count.
“I remember working, I guess getting in the way, with my grandpa,” Mercer said with a laugh. “We used to do a lot of transplanting our own plants and he grew his own plants.”
Now Mercer is turning the page on a new chapter in the history of this company. Since December 30, 2021, the flower shop is permanently closed. However, Mercer will continue its landscaping business.
“It was a bit on both sides. I was relieved and then I also thought, well, I hope that’s the right decision. It will be the jackpot of the winter. But I think it will be fine, ”Mercer said.
It was a difficult decision for him. But as he reflects on old memories and time at the store, he says it’s just time to downsize.
“It means a lot. It will always be a part of me. I have memories from as far back as I can remember,” Mercer said.
But he hopes that’s not the end. Ideally, he would like to see someone take an interest in their old flower shop. Someone who shares the same work ethic as those who have made the company successful for so many years.
“Just work. You just have to work it. Take some time. You give up some things because you know you have to work. From my grandparents, from my mom and dad, and now from me… we just spent a lot of time here, ”said Mercer.
